Joanna Aloysia Patterson
Artist Biography
My fine art photographs are psychological portraits that aim towards universality through anonymity of the figure. They have a shallow depth of field and have a dark quality, so as to abstract the figures. The photographs are of the psyche, not the real world. I create work in a fairly traditional manner – shooting film, printing in the darkroom.
I am a native of the Chicago area, graduating from Columbia College with a B.F.A. in photography. I was a recipient of the John Mulvany Award (2007). A selection from the series of photographs titled, universal self-portrait, has recently been displayed at Columbia College’s B.A. + B.F.A. Photography Exhibition.
Untitled Psyche is my newest work-in-progress. I intend on remaining in Chicago, and continuing these psychological portraits. I hope to continue to display my photographs in group shows throughout Chicago and the surrounding areas.
